Calligraphy Workshop

I’m the type of person who you won’t find doing sports on weekends. I’ll be more likely lounging by our coffee table, sipping some tea, nipping a bar of chocolate while reading a novel with my red thin-framed specs on or walking round the mall (with my 3-inched heels!), browsing through rows and rows of shops and doing my groceries. For days I was into a quest of finding a new craft that would suit my personality.

I’ve always been interested in arts and Calligraphy happens to be a less intimidating form of it. It’s classic and meticulous – it’s so me.

So on November 16, 2015 while everyone else was raving about the APEC summit and its corresponding hellish traffic, I was giddy travelling from Novaliches where I spent the night to Greenhills to attend my Calligraphy Workshop.

Calligraphy Workshop
It was held in a cozy corner of Henris Building in Ortigas Avenue. The venue itself was already inspiring with lots of water-colored arts on the wall and a display of calligraphy inks in variety of colors and brands, different quills, nibs and practice sheets.

There were six of us plus our Instructor Ms. Alex Ventura. She's super talented, passionate and inspiring. We were all girls with interesting stories and creativity to share.

One thing I learned (or confirmed rather) about myself during the workshop was that I have a terrible penmanship. My hand was so shaky at first causing a messy handwriting. But as we were taught the basic strokes, techniques and proper use of the dip pen, I gradually got the hang of it.

Just a tip if from an awful Calligrapher-wannabe: Dip your nib just a little above the vent hole so it won’t have too much ink and won’t have to deal with it splattering on your paper like I did.

Although I wasn’t good at it, not even in my low standards, it was still fun and interesting. I got to talk with wonderful girls, learn a craft and eat pizza. Plus I was away from the office for a day – probably the best part.

I've been practicing it practically every night while watching TV and I'm getting better. Yay!
